Glenfield

Current status: Inactive

It appears that this tiny advertisement in the Cartophilic Notes and News magazine, copy dated January 1981, started the story of this club:

  • “A new branch for the East Midlands?”
Mr J. A. Drew of Glenfield in Leicester is anxious to contact any members who would be interested in his intention to form a new branch.”

Sadly the idea of a branch never materialised, but the Glenfield Card Collectors Club was formed. However it did not last very long, and in "Cartophilic Notes and News", volume 11, No.119, dated for May/June 1983, the new editor sadly included the following words :

  • Glenfield disbanding
Sadly, in my first issue I have to report the disbanding of one of the non-affiliated Clubs - Glenfield Card Collectors Club. Organiser Jim Drew tells me that support (financial and otherwise) has declined over recent momths and regrettably he has decided to call it a day. I know Jim worked hard for the Leicester based Club and it must be painful to demobilize at a time when all Society Branches and Card Clubs are flourishing and new Branches being formed. Sorry you can no longer `fix-it` Jim, but `un bienfait n`est jamais perdu` - A kind act is never forgotten (Fr.)

Now John Drew also had a famous father, W.W. Drew, who was the president of our West Country Branch. And John would later go on to found the Cheshire Branch, which rose from the ashes of Timperley, starting in a small room at the High Lane Conservative Club, with a list of some of his former club mates, hoping that they would be able to tell any former members that he did not have contact details for.  He was made a life member of the Cartophilic Society at our Southport Convention in 2014, something he continued to gain much pleasure from right until he died in April 2020.
