This card shows the future, but I know not what the set is actually called, or how many of them were in the set, or even when it was issued. Though I suspect the latter was in the early 1900s, simply because it allows a hundred years for the image to become reality. We do know that the line on the bottom of the reverse reads "Kunstdruck" (high quality art printing) - but as for "Friedberg, Berlin", not a clue.
Anyway, according to this card, in the year 2000 we would be able to sit at home and see our favourite opera singer projected on to our wall, rather than having to go to the concert. I think this is rather sad, for I would way rather be at that concert, even if I could hardly see, and seldom touch the singer, for it is the being there that makes the memory.
The bottom cartouche says "Tooneel Voorstelling int jaar 2000" (that translates to Stage Performance in the year 2000)
Apparently the first ever projection television was made in 1956. It was not the first projector, that was invented by the Lumière brothers, in 1895, and it was a camera, plus a projector, and a film printer all in one. However both of those simply projected an image that was already on film out of the projector and on to the wall, or a screen. Our main image is vastly different, for it is a live image, simultaneously screened elsewhere without being recorded. I am not sure if this is yet possible, though I suppose if you watched Glastonbury live this year it was a similar thing, and if you had a projection television you could have reenacted our card. As far as the inset of the lady on the couch listening through her telephone, that is now pretty common, with our mobile phones.
"Vraagt" on the back, by the way, simply means "ask for" Boon`s Cacao. I had never heard of them when I was sent this card but it turns out that they were a very prolific issuer of mostly postcard sized cards, so we will probably get to hear about them again in the near future.
So we thought it might be fun to see what else had changed from our cards of the day...
SATURDAY : first televised football :
In 2010, football was not just on tv, but in 3D - and the match involved Arsenal. Check out https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-10056499
SUNDAY : John Logie Baird and his fuzzy 30 line definition
Strangely, the term high definition was first used in August 1936; and today we have even more of it, with Ultra High Definition.
MONDAY : Broadcasting House, Central London
Though this is still in use, movement has been steady towards regional centres rather than only being in London. Most of this is news based for quick access to breaking stories. and also to a giant complex in Manchester, called Media City
TUESDAY : First televised outside broadcast
It was estimated that two billion people watched the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and it was viewed in almost every country.
WEDNESDAY : Doctor Who
The Doctor is still going strong but he has changed back and forth regarding gender. It's still as good as ever, and still attracts a huge audience.
THURSDAY - Colour at Wimbledon
One of the nation`s favourite sporting venues, and not just because of the strawberries and cream. Check out some fantastic facts about how Wimbledon has been screened throughout the years.
FRIDAY - what will our future hold? One day, perhaps, we will find out.....but for now it is veiled in mystery. Would we like to know? I think not, and that it would definitely spoil the anticipation, the cliff hangers, the twists and turns before our destiny reveals itself to us....
