Card of the Day - 2022-12-17

A & BC "Footballers"
A & BC [trade : confectionery : gum : UK] "Footballers" (1964-65) 53/58 - AAB-340.1 : ABF.10.4

This card forms part of the first batch of "English" players, though our man, Noel Dwyer, was actually born in Dublin. That first batch runs from card 1 to card 58, which is the checklist, and a team photo rather than a single player. The cards measure 81 x 56/57 m/m and they have what are known as "Quiz" backs, the answer being revealed by the rubbing of a coin along the vacant space. Not sure how that worked, if anyone would like to educate me, and us all, for that matter

Our man was born in October 1934. He played schoolboy football, which is where he was spotted, but he actually began with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1957.  Our card shows him at Swansea Town, his team between the 1960/61 and the 1964/65 seasons. During that season he moved to Plymouth Argyle, where he stayed until 1965/66, relocating for the final time to Charlton Athletic for a single season.

He was also part of the Republic of Ireland National Squad from 1959 until 1964.

The only other card we have managed to find for him was produced by David Rowland in 1999, part of  "Famous Footballers" Series 3 - the photo shows him at West Ham United in August 1959. How great to have the actual date on the card!

Sadly Noel Dwyer died in December 1992, aged just fifty-eight.
