We wonder whether snow will ever return to this country in the quantity that it used to? These days winters are rainy, but not that snowy - indeed we have not had widespread snow since 2010, when over eighty per cent of all weather stations throughout the land were able to report that they could see a fair quantity of snow had settled on the ground.
This charming set dates from 1883, and shows a time when rivers froze and people were able to go skating on them - when shopping was only accomplished by sleigh. Strangely, in the United Kingdom, Christmas Day in 1883 was very mild, and the average temperature was 15–16°C (59–61°F). That was a stark contrast to March 1883, when an Arctic blast led to a low temperature of 1.9°C (or minus 3°F). It would be one of the coldest Marches ever, since records began in 1659.
